Our approach

When we first started gardening we wanted to plant any and everything that we saw sold as a plant and quickly discovered that is not only economically unfeasible but success is hard to be achieved when you plant what is not natural to your zone or not the optimal time of year to grow.  We only offer plants that will have the highest success with our local climate.  This is why our Spring/Summer growing plants differ from our Fall/Winter plants.

Seedlings

Our climate

Ask any Gainesville resident and almost universally they will express to you how hot and humid the summers are and how active the pests are.  We factor this in with our plants and select the varieties of seeds that are considered the most successful in our intense summers and mild winters. While we still have that itch to grow so many things,  cannot take special requests to grow plants that likely will not grow well here or will limit our ability to offer high quality plants that will produce for multiple weeks.  We want all of our customers and clients to have successful gardens and a very important piece is starting with the right seed at the right time.

Watering the Garden

Our growing seasons

A basic Google search will tell you that our zone, Zone 9, has a year around growing season.  And many articles will tell you that you can grow certain foods twice a year. While this is true that the warm weather quickly germinates seeds, not all plants will thrive in both seasons.  We focus on offering plants that will produce in the season that will be the most bountiful and least susceptible to pests.  While we know that it is not always possible to eat food during its best season, the more you can eat food that is at its freshest and local, the better the food tastes and benefits you.  Read this article to learn more about eating seasonally and learning what produce is in season for you.
